PSI – Pilot Demonstration & Research Farm
for applied Research in Animal Nutrition and Farm Management in Pig Husbandry in Vietnam
Provimi (http://www.provimi.com) is a global leader in providing animal nutrition solutions through high-quality products and services for ruminants, poultry, swine and pets. Today, Provimi has about 80 production sites in over 30 countries and exports to more than 100 countries. Provimi currently provides 7% of the world’s total feed demand.
The proposed PSI project concerns a strategic innovative investment in establishing a Pilot Demonstration & Research Pig Husbandry Farm in Vietnam, executed by Provimi Vietnam in cooperation with NutiFarm Corporation, a 100% Vietnamese Capital Venture. With the proposed pilot project, the prospective project partners intend to pursue long-term strategic objectives in terms of further market development both in terms of market share and volume.
AgroBioSolutions assisted the project partners to develop the project proposal and the underlying business plan. The application qualified and was approved in 2011.

The project (total budget of Euro 1,491,558) consisted of a Hardware component (housing systems, pig genetics) as well as Technical Assistance (training & education of local staff and students), and project management. The project proved commercially viable at an IRR of 15%. Improvements in technical performance, foreseen as logical result of gaining experience as the project progresses, will further boost financial performance, indicating the Project’s true potential for growth after PSI completion.
Besides boosting sales turnover of the Project Partners, the PSI project is assumed to have significant, positive long term effects on the Vietnamese pig value chain. The major problems experienced in Swine Production sector in Vietnam relate to imperfections in the production value chain. The project intends to contribute to solve a few of them with focus on those problems which occur at Farm Level (Nutrition, Housing, Breeding) and problems associated with the quality of Human Resources. The Project Demo & Research Farm, and the resulting output of innovations, will contribute to enhancement and growth of the Pig Value Chain, as it will address and contribute to solve basic shortcomings experienced by the pig husbandry sector in Vietnam, which have lead to its current suboptimal performance. Basically the Project will provide the local pig sector with ready to consume extension & technology packages ready for dissemination.
Knowledge transfer is key, essential for securing and sustaining employee performance. By improving the quality of Human Resources (Project Staff & Employees (20 FTE), local Farmers (40-60 FTE) and Students (100-250 per year) the Project is assumed to contribute to sustainable economic development of the Pig Value Chain in Vietnam.
Members of the local pig farm community will benefit: at local farm level, the project will incorporate and foster 20 to 30 local pig farm entrepreneurs (out-growers, fattening enterprises) in a (continuous) process of developing their farm enterprise(s) and the required managerial and entrepreneurial skills, thereby generating employment, income and redistributing wealth. The Project will organise open & study days from which the farm community can benefit while being exposed to modern pig husbandry systems, production & management methods en techniques.
